The Fever Man narrates the biography of John Gorrie, M.D., who invented machines for room ventilation, air conditioning, and ice making during a yellow fever epidemic beginning in 1841. His goals were always to save the lives of fever patients by cooling them, and to improve public health literally by "draining the swamp" that existed in parts of Apalachicola, Florida in pioneer days.
